How Much Does a 12×12 Paver Weigh? Per Piece and Per Pallet

A 12×12 concrete paver weighs about 24 pounds at the standard 2-inch thickness. Thinner 1-inch stepping stones run 16–18 lb, and the thicker 2⅔-inch (60 mm) pavers used for driveways come in at 26–29 lb. The rule of thumb is roughly 12 pounds per inch of thickness for a one-square-foot concrete paver, and natural stone runs 10–20% heavier than that.

Concrete weighs about 145 lb per cubic foot, and a 12×12 paver 1 inch thick is one-twelfth of a cubic foot — hence the 12 lb per inch figure. Real products often land a little above that because nominal 12-inch pavers are cast a hair oversize and manufacturers use dense mixes for strength. Always check the spec sheet if you are near a weight limit.

How many 12×12 pavers are on a pallet?

Usually 100 to 144, depending on the manufacturer and thickness. Home-centre “patio-on-a-pallet” kits are typically 100 pieces (100 sq ft). Contractor pallets from paver manufacturers often carry 120, 132, or 144 pieces of 2-inch stock. Thicker 60 mm driveway pavers ship fewer per pallet because the load hits the weight limit first.

That makes a full pallet of 2-inch 12×12 pavers weigh roughly 2,500 to 3,500 lb, plus 40–50 lb for the wooden pallet itself. A pallet of 60 mm pavers can reach 4,000 lb. Suppliers move them by forklift for a reason.

How much does a 12×12 paver patio weigh in total?

Because a 12×12 paver is exactly one square foot, the patio total is easy: the weight of one paver is also the weight per square foot. A 2-inch paver at 24 lb gives you 24 lb per square foot of finished surface, so a 12 × 12 ft patio (144 sq ft) carries about 3,460 lb of pavers — before the base.

That number matters most on roof decks, balconies, and second-storey terraces, where residential structures are commonly designed for 40–60 lb per square foot of live load. Pavers laid directly on a roof deck eat 24 lb of that before anyone stands on it; on pedestals the assembly runs higher still. Thin 1-inch stepping stones at 16 lb/sq ft are the usual answer where weight is capped, and anything over a habitable space is worth an engineer’s sign-off rather than a rule of thumb.

2⅔″ (60 mm) driveway26–29 lb3,700–4,200 lb55–70

On the ground the paver weight is the small part of the job. A 12 × 12 ft patio also needs roughly 4–6 inches of compacted base: about 2.2 cubic yards of crushed stone at around 1.4 tons per yard, or 3 tons of gravel — roughly the same weight again as the pavers themselves. That is the load your driveway and your delivery plan actually have to handle.

Can you haul pavers in a pickup?

A half-ton pickup (F-150, Silverado 1500, RAM 1500) is rated for about 1,500–2,000 lb of payload — 60 to 80 pavers of 2-inch thickness per trip, well short of a full pallet. Load them flat, centred over the axle, and strap the stack; loose pavers shift and chip each other. For anything more than a small walkway, supplier delivery is cheaper than three or four trips and a sore back.

For a 12×12 patio you need 144 pavers, so plan on delivery or two full pickup loads. See how many pavers for a 12×12 patio for the full material list, and use the paver calculator for any other size — it gives the paver count, base gravel, and sand together.
